Every dog owner knows that along with the joy can come the stress and frustration of behavioral problems, which are expensive to diagnose and treat. Enter Kim Brophey, award-winning canine behavior consultant.

Using cutting-edge research, Brophey has developed a groundbreaking system that allows owners to identify what their dog is struggling with, why, and how they can fix it. Brophey's approach is unlike anything that has been published before and will give dog owners a new understanding of what motivates and affects their dog's behavior. Brophey's innovative technique rethinks the way we categorize dogs, and distills information from over twenty scientific disciplines into four comprehensive elements: learning, environment, genetics, and self. With revolutionary tips for specific dog breeds, this book will change the life of every dog owner and lead to happier human-canine relationships.

What experts are saying about Meet Your Dog:
"In Meet Your Dog, nationally known behavior consultant Kim Brophey introduces L.E.G.S. (Learning, Environment, Genetics, and Self), an innovative model for understanding how dogs think and why they behave the way they do. Based on the latest findings in the field of canine cognition and behavior, this book is an invaluable resource, both for experienced dog lovers and for individuals seeking their first four-legged friend."
Hal Herzog, author of Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat: Why It's So Hard To Think Straight About Animals

"It's refreshing to finally find a book that takes into consideration the many predispositions to behavior problems in dogs. Many written works and theories do not take this into account, yet it is one of the major keys to understanding, and subsequently changing, canine behavior. This book is unique as it considers the whole dog. Dogs are different. They have different personalities and breeds have specific tendencies. Kim does not ignore this. On the contrary, she teaches us simple and practical ways to use these differences and tendencies to not only give dogs a better life, but also to have a more harmonious relationship with their human.

This publication is a game changer because it teaches us to really see the dog in its entirety. It present us with a framework to understand all the major factors that are essential in understanding canine behavior."

Alexandre Rossi, star of "Pet Mission" (National Geographic, Brazil), and author of A Dog at the Keyboard

"Meet Your Dog is an original book that will lead even the best of us dog people to think about both dog behavior and our own behavior in new ways. It is an important book that creates a bridge between behavior science and its daily practical application by dog owners and trainers. I truly wish I had had this book to read fifty years ago."
Ray Coppinger, author of Dogs: A New Understanding of Canine Origin, Behavior, and EvolutionWhat is a Dog?, and How Dogs Work

    YOU NEED THIS BOOK!

Posted by Steph Duchesne on 9th Oct 2023

I feel like nothing I could say could do this book proper justice. I have loved hearing Kim Brophey’s perspectives on dog training & the LEGS model for a while now, and this book is just the sweetest cherry on top! There are books out there written to help the general public better understand their dogs and books out there that are aimed to better help trainers and those working in animal behaviour to better approach their work… this book perfectly exists at the crossroads and is a must-have for absolutely anyone interested in dogs! It has a beautiful, easy-going way of celebrating all dogs for who they are, and to help their human companions better understand their pets needs and individuality. I found myself smiling often as I read through the playful descriptions of the dog groupings she lists, thinking of the dogs in my own life, as well as those I’ve worked with. I have recommended it over and over again, and think it belongs right up there along with “the Culture Clash”, “Don’t Shoot the Dog”, and “Wag” in regards to books we recommend to clients!

    Dog Behavior

Posted by Michele Godlevski on 22nd Mar 2021

This is one of the best books on understanding dog behavior! I love the system Kim has developed. I also love the in-depth breed-group analysis. I bought this as an Audible book at first and now am buying a hard copy for each of my instructors.

The missing piece of the canine puzzle

Posted by Sarah Wallin Bååth on 31st Dec 2018

I work as a professional dog trainer and with behavior problems, and I have often wondered what could be done about the increasing problems we see with dogs in our society. A firm believer that the dogs are never to be blamed for these problems, I struggled to see a solution. But, Brophey has collected the results from various fields of science and put together the missing puzzle piece. I believe that with this book and the system Brophey has constructed, many of these problems can be avoided to begin with, and the ones that already exist can be dealt with. I have since reading the book included a new service for my customers along with Brohey's system, where they get my help to choose the right breed and puppy, thus decreasing the risk of problematic behaviors from the very start. If both the owner's and the dog's expectations are decently matched, I believe there's a greater chance of a long and happy life together for all. It's a fantastic read that I recommend professionals and dog owners alike.

    Meet Your Dog

Posted by Terry Kennedy-Lares on 4th Oct 2018

While this is not a "How to Train Your Dog" book, it will give you insights into your dog that will help you Immensely in your training process. Kim's detailed descriptions of the different behavior propensities for each canine type will give you an understanding of why your dog is actually doing the behavior you are trying to change. Want to know why your herding dog is barking? Want to know why your terrier is digging up your back yard? This book will tell you, and it also will give you a few ideas to help with the problem. Reading this book has made me more tolerant of some of the behaviors my dogs have. As a trainer, it also gives me a methodology of how to look at each individual dog. Understanding their "Learning, Experience, Genetics, and Self" will give any trainer a detailed look into the individual behavior of each dog that crosses your path. I recommend this book for anyone who owns a dog, or works professionally with dogs.

Anyone here have a dog? Anyone thinking about getting a dog? YOU NEED THIS BOOK! Kim has such a calm and realisitc approach to helping people underestand their dogs and the expectations we have for living with that dog. I review each breed/genetic section before I see a client. This helps remind myself of the potential issues they could have, and how to inject some humor into the situation. I will bring the book with me and read some parts of the gentic section to some clients! Faces light up, they smile and the remember they are not alone. Their dog is not out of the norm and there is a way to bring more peace to the home. The world does not need another training book- but a book to to open us to WHO ARE DOGS ARE. Kim gave us exactly what we need. This is a quick read that you wil go back to again and again- even for those of us who have been in the indsutry for years! Share this book with clients- share it with SHELTERS, RESCUES and VETS! Let's set up people and dogs for success by making sure they know what they are getting.
