Retriever Training for Spaniels
This is a well thought out, spaniel specific, book and the first to introduce me to positive reinforcement concepts. It also lead me to Karen Pryor's Don't Shoot the Dog book and subsequently, via additional reading, to Robert Milner's two later positive training works and, by extension, to James Spencer's Flushing Spaniel training books. Milner offers some differing insights into dog communications and learning which greatly enhances comprehension of Pamela's work. Also Milner cites Karen's work--so both approaches share a common philosophy. Spencer, while more "old school", none the less offers expansion on Pam's training concepts. That said, Retriever Training for Spaniels will form the basis of training of my new Boykin pup. So much so, I provided a copy to my closest assistant, my kid sister/neighbor. Overall, this is a well thought out text for anyone undertaking training a duck/upland spaniel retriever.
